“Internet gaming operators are off to a good start in Michigan,” says Richard S. Kalm, executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, after releasing figures today from the state’s first days with a new revenue builder.
Beginning with the statewide launch of Internet Gaming and online sports betting on January 22, through the end of the month, Michigan betting operators reported $42.7 million in gross receipts. As a result, the state will receive approximately $4.4 million in taxes and payments for the first ten days.
Taxes and other usage payments received via online gaming is used to fund K-12 students programs, and for other funding for the city of Detroit and other Michigan tribal communities, according to Kalm.
Michigan’s first month marks one of the most successful online gambling launches in US history.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Sports Betting Act and Lawful Internet Gaming Act into law in December of 2019. But due to the pandemic crisis in 2020, internet gaming did not start in the state until last month. Currently, there are 12 licensed internet gaming operators in Michigan, with more planned to come on board this year. Four Winds is the latest company to join the Michigan online gambling market.

But more are on the way. Parx is expected to be on its way to Michigan soon, as well as FireKeepers and Soaring Eagle. At market maturity, Michigan sports betting will feature 15 sites.
